What are explosion proof plugs/sockets?

A plug is the movable connector attached to an electrically operated device, and the socket is fixed on equipment or a building structure and connected to an energised electrical circuit. The plug is a male connector with protruding pins that match the openings and female contacts in a socket. Some plugs have female contacts that are used only for an earth ground connection. Some plugs have built-in fuses for safety.

Explosion proof plugs and sockets have been designed/certified to contain any explosion originating within the housing due to any sparks from within and prevent igniting vapours, gases, dust or fibres in the air surrounding it.

This can turn deadly as if any spark/explosion originating from a plug/socket escapes into the surrounding hazardous atmosphere, it could result in a bigger explosion by igniting the air around it.

Therefore, for safety reasons, when equipment is based in hazardous areas, it is important to use high quality and certified explosion proof equipment as this would greatly reduce the risk of explosions and fire to personnel and industrial property.
